IDENTITY SECURITY
Don’t let one tragedy lead to another. In the wake of national tragedies like the bombings at the Boston marathon, a recent IRS Tax Tips bulletin issued April 19, 2013 warns that there may be a rise in fraudulent charitable solicitations. How can you make sure that the money you would like to donate gets used for the intended purpose?
The bulletin offers the following suggestions:
• Donate to qualified charities. Use the Exempt Organizations Select Check tool found at IRS.gov to find qualified charities.
• Pay attention to the name of the charity. Use extra caution when considering charities with names similar to nationally known organizations – a common scheme is to use names or websites that sound or look like those of legitimate organizations.
• Do not give out personal financial information. If someone contacts you soliciting a donation DO NOT give your social security number, credit card or bank account number or password.
• Do not give or send cash. Any donations should be made by check, credit card or some other manner that will allow you to document the donation for security and tax record purposes.
• Report suspected fraud. The IRS.gov site has a feature to report suspected fraud found at “Report Phishing”.
The complete bulletin and other identity security tips are accessible at IRS.gov using the key words “scams and schemes.”
The business practice group at Martin, Lord & Osman, P.A. hopes these tips will help you keep your donations and identity secure.
