Elder Law
The need of legal services for older people is well established. The types of legal problems older people face are constant: age discrimination, obtaining federal benefits such as Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, appeals from denial of Medicare benefits, establishing Medicaid eligibility, housing problems, mental incapacity and guardianship, and abusive or poor quality home health or nursing home care.
Legal services of many kinds are more in demand by various subgroups of seniors than others, but some kind of legal help is likely to be needed by all at some time in their later years. Elder Law encompasses estate planning, property management, health care planning and public benefits. Attorneys who practice in this area typically go beyond traditional legal issues and by advice, referral, or direct assistance, try to address problems in securing health and social services and work closely with other professionals such as health care providers.
